GWP Malaysia Engages Future Science Communicators at Universiti Malaya

The Global Wildlife Program (GWP) Malaysia was invited to speak at the Department of Science and Technology Studies, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya on 13 October 2026. The talk, titled “Communicating the Wild: How Science Communication and Technology Are Shaping Conservation in Malaysia,” was delivered to postgraduate students from the Master of Science Communication and Public Engagement and Master of Sustainability Science programmes, introducing them to the role of strategic communication in wildlife conservation.

The session covered GWP Malaysia’s mission to protect three of the nation’s most iconic species, the Malayan tiger, Bornean orangutan, and Bornean banteng, and how tools like camera traps and drones support conservation efforts on the ground. Students also explored the challenges of misinformation in conservation and the ethical responsibilities of communicating wildlife data online.

The talk featured several interactive activities, including quizzes on GWP Malaysia and a misinformation-spotting exercise, both of which saw enthusiastic participation from the students. Several students also expressed interest in the Honorary Wildlife Warden Course, conducted this year by the Sabah Wildlife Department under GWP Malaysia.

The engagement aligns with GWP Malaysia’s broader mandate to strengthen public awareness and stakeholder participation in wildlife conservation. By connecting with postgraduate programmes in science communication and sustainability science, GWP Malaysia contributes to building national capacity for evidence-based conservation communication, supporting Malaysia’s commitments under the National Policy on Biological Diversity and the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Beyond the student audience, the session also opened doors for potential collaboration between GWP Malaysia and lecturers from the department, creating opportunities for future partnerships in research, outreach, and conservation communication.

GWP Malaysia is a UNDP and World Bank initiative funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) with Responsible Parties PERHILITAN, PDRM, Sabah Wildlife Department, and Sarawak Forestry Corporation.
